Store Bought Egg Nog Recipe

Recipeska
So, what is egg nog? This delicious holiday drink is a favorite, especially around Christmas time. Everyone has their own egg not recipe, but for the most part it is made with sweet milk, eggs, sugar, and liquor. Not all egg nogs, though, are spiked and some even have additional flavors like nutella and almond!
The drink is usually thick and a light white color with specks of cinnamon floating around in it. Cinnamon is another common ingredient added to this delicious and festive holiday drink.

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Large Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Pitcher (for storage)

Ingredients

  • 5 large egg yolks For this recipe you won't need to use the egg whites. Because of this, I recommend making scrambled egg whites with salmon and tomatoes so that the egg whites don't go to waste!
  • 1 Cup of Brown Sugar
  • 2 Cups of Whole Milk For milk you can always substitute the milk to a plant-based alternative if you are looking to make non-dairy egg nog.
  • 1 Cup of Cream
  • 2 tablespoons of cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 4 oz of any liquor of your choice For spice lovers try a spiced rum!

Instructions

  • During the first step in this store-bought egg not recipe, you will need to whisk the egg yolks well with the milk. This step is crucial. The smoother the mixture is, the sweeter and more palpable it will be to drink.
  • For the second step in this recipe, you will need to add sugar slowly. Do this by pouring small amounts as you whisk. If you pour the entire cup of sugar into the large bowl, this will make it harder to smoothen. The more sugar, the more foam will appear at the top, which is not what you want when making this drink.
  • It is okay if the sugar does not dissolve completely, however, there should not be large clumps left in your large bowl.
  • Take a blender, if you have one, and place all of the ingredients, including the mixture in the large bowl. Blend well until smooth. Make sure that blend slowly as this will reduce the amount of foam your drink produces from the movement.
  • Technically, you do not need to use a blender, however, it will make it harder for you. Whisking the ingredients by hand can cause uncomfortable cramps in your hand. The clumps are also harder to loosen.
  • In the last and final step for this store bought egg nog recipe, pour the drink from the blender into a pitcher with ice. Egg nog needs to be refrigerated as it contains heavy dairy products. Garnish with cinnamon and mint if necessary. If you want to preserve the egg nog longer, you can freeze the drink into cubes to enjoy later on!

Notes

  • Not everyone likes using alcohol in their drinks, however, there are certain types of liquor that blend so well with store bought egg nog that it may surprise you! Did you know that this drink was originally made with an ale-like alcohol? As it continued to develop and change, different types of alcohols were used for the drink!
  • One of the most common types of alcohol used in store bought egg nogs is rum. Spiced rums add a level of heat and flavor that is unique to egg nog. Some others prefer using whiskey. Regardless of the type of liquor you choose to add to your own store bought egg nog recipe, be sure to add it to the entire batch so that the distribution is equal.
